When he wasn’t supervising the control room at Phila. Electric, Ed could be found reciting or writing poetry, hunting, or roofing. He put in a lot of time at PECO so he could savor time off . Then he’d fit in fishing with road trips to Canada and Alaska with buddies. Somehow he found time to tee it up with his grandsons.. By marrying an Italian (or because he cooked so well), Ed became an honorary member of Sons of Italy in Paulsboro.rnA Sadie Hawkins dance got him into the arms of his future bride, Dolores Rotella. Her friends double dared her to ask him to the dance. It was years later when he was a Merchant Marine that they got reunited and the sparks flew, Their 49 year marriage brought about four children : Karen ( John) Casella, Kelli-Ann ( Roy) Parkell, Kristen ( Dexter) Grant, and Keith (Juanita) , and then those special grandchildren to spoil: Angelina and Austin Welch, Nicholas and Sophia Casella, James and Robert Parkell, Jonathan and Lauren Grant. He is also survived by a brother, Richard and a sister, Deborah DeBerardinis.rnCome celebrate 71 generous years Thursday 6 to 8PM and Friday from 9AM at Daley Life Celebration Studio, Swedesboro. I have known Ed for at least 57 years and after reading his obit, never knew he could dance !rnGlad that I knew him and will miss Him.
My memories of Ed take me back to the Dairy Twirl in Collingdale. It was Ed’s first stop when he was on leave from the Merchant Marines. He and my husband discussed what was going on in town. The end of the conversation always included some type of poetry. In the 50’s and 60’s not many male teenagers admitted to liking poetry. But no one would dare tease Ed about it because he was known as one of the tough guys. Little did we know then that he was just a rough, tough creampuff with a heart as big as Collingdale. As we packed on the years and the Dairy Twirl was gone, our new meeting place was none other than the doctors office. We would see each other a couple times a year. Rest in peace, Ed. Not only will your family and friends miss you but Collingdale has lost one of its sons.
Thank you Ed for your friendship at Eddystone and sharing your knowledge and work ethic with me. You got me through the Chief Operator’s Test. :)rnRest in Peace, you will be missed.
Bernadette, Mary, Christina and John offer their sincere condolences to the Welches. We were deeply saddened by the news about Ed’s passing and have Ed and your family in our thoughts and prayers. It just seems like yesterday we were neighbors on Westwood Drive. May God bless Ed and your family during this time and always.

In high school, I didn’t know Ed Welch well, although I remember him as a good football lineman. Many years later, at a Grand reunion for Collingdale High School, there was not quite enough room for me at the Class of ’59 table, so I sat at an earlier class’s table next to Ed. He was kind enough to converse with me on a range of topics, even giving me advice on certain electrical questions I had. I truly wish I had known of his involvement in poetry, because I think there’s nothing better, and that would have made for an even more beautiful memory.
I was blessed to have worked with Ed at Eddystone for many years. He was friends with my father, Bob, as well. They both attended Collingdale HS, played football together, were in the Merchant Marine’s together and worked at PECo together. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this very sad time. rnrnEd always knew how to make you feel special when you were around him. I remember when I first got married I was working at Eddystone. New Year’s Eve that first year, Ed brought me two lobster tails from the seafood store for my husband and I to enjoy that evening. It was a complete surprise. I will never forget his many, many kindnesses. He will be missed.
