Doris Schetler

Doris never missed her exercise, for everyday she walked with the Lord. A lifelong parishioner of St. Peter’s in Riverside, she was always devoted to the church. She never missed Mass, was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters and was active with many of their prayer groups. But her faith extended well beyond the church walls. There was seldom a day that Doris did not say the Rosary and do her daily Scripture readings. A native of Riverside, she was always active with the Historical Society and the Riverside Women’s Club. Likewise, she worked at the First National Bank in town for many years. She started as a teller and eventually trained the new employees. But, when not in the area she could usually be found enjoying the shore at her home in Beach Haven. rnDuring her days at Riverside High School, a fellow student jokingly asked Doris who she thought she would someday marry. She didn’t mean to be prophetic, but she pointed out a young football player named Jackson Schetler. By 1946 the two were wed. He passed earlier this year, and was laid to rest on Valentine’s Day. She will join him on their 67th anniversary. Together, their lives were blessed by their sons: Bill (Bernadette) of Yardley, PA and the late Bob, their grandchildren: Melanie Ziegler, Carolyn Cochrane (Frank), April Schetler, William Schetler, Jr. (Stephanie) and Rebecca Harkness (Brian); and their great-grandsons, Josh and Ryan. Doris is also survived by her brother, Francis “Skinny” Hartman (Peggy) of Riverside and nieces and nephews: Ray, Carl, Donna, Helen, Marie, Diane, Christy and their families. She was predeceased by her parents: Peter and Helen Hartman. rnDoris’ 88 wonderful years (June 4, 1924-Feb. 27, 2013) were celebrated Saturday with a Mass of Christian Burial at Jesus the Good Shepherd Church (St. Peter’s Site), 101 Middleton St., Riverside, NJ 08075. Interment followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the church. rn
