Louise Marter
Dogs were not Louise’s whole life, but they made her life whole. From her earliest days growing up on her family’s farm in Edgewater Park she always loved animals. Although she’d go off to graduate from Wilbur Watts High School, Trenton State College and eventually go on to work for US Pipe in Burlington, her affinity for her four legged friends never changed. Although she bred, hunted and exhibited Beagles for many years, the Welsh and Irish Terriers held a special place in her heart.
Likewise she enjoyed horses, especially on the track and for hunt. From Jersey to Virginia she attended many events and was familiar with the thoroughbreds in many of the major races.
Louise is survived by her good friends Rose Marie Saporito, Becky Dreher-Fegley and Joyce Palm.
Come celebrate Louise’s 88 wonderful years (Jan. 1, 1925-May 14, 2013) Tuesday from 10 AM at the Sweeney Funeral Home 478 Cooper St., Beverly, where the service will be at 11. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Riverfront Historical Society PO Box 172 Beverly, NJ 08010.

I’m sorry to learn of Louise’s passing but do know that she lived her life as she wished.
During my tenure as librarian at the Burlington County Historical Society, Louise and I became good friends. Louise visited the library often, always diligently searching microfilm for information about her Budd and Marter relatives. I can see her now, patiently reading microfilm by the hour! We shared many hours together and I was honored to be her friend. I had always thought I would meet Louise unexpectedly in the Veterinary Office. I knew how much she loved her dogs. She was a great person!

Louise was first cousin to my dad, Russell T. Smith, and my uncle, Robert K. Smith. The cousins found each other later in life and enjoyed their visits and phone calls. Louise brought them memories of their father, who had left their lives when they were very small boys. Louise connected them with a rich history of their family (the Wards; Louise’s mother, Rita, was their aunt). I only met Louise within the last five years. During the times we were together, we shared family stories and a love of animals. I will always fondly remember Louise. Louise was blessed to have devoted friends, which goes to the very heart of her character.
Louise and I began talking about Marter Genealogy. She became a good friend.
