Elizabeth Marker
At 4’11” she was a tremendous, quiet force. Betty never liked the word “no” and without ever being loud or aggressive she was always able to get things done. Her family was her greatest love, but theatre was a close second. For Betty it had to be Broadway, it was New York or nothing. She danced the Jitterbug and strutted to Proud Mary, cooked the best stuffing known to man and made the best breakfast in town. Though she had a driver’s license, she preferred walking and thought nothing of going on foot from Riverside to K-Mart. Her easy going ways had a calming effect on everyone and she thought it important to know how to laugh at one’s self. Her strength was maintained through her daily scripture readings, though she also like to check out the National Enquire. Betty’s happiness came from doing for others: her birthday cards were covered in stickers and she put signs of celebration all about the house. Everyone knew her as Grandmom Marker.
Two uniformed men struck up a conversation with a young Betty and one asked her out on a date. When she opened the door she didn’t find the man she’d agreed to meet. William Marker had paid him off and taken his place. The tall, good looking GI won her over. Through the ups and downs of life, their marriage always remained strong. They were blessed by three children: Dolores (Jack) Rose, Bill Marker and Elizabeth (Joe) Griffin; grandchildren, Dolores, Laura, Sharon, Michael, Ricky, Anthony, Whitney, Joseph James and Elizabeth Kelly; 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Scragg, her best friend and shadow, Theresa Wojciechowski, and many nieces and nephews.
Come celebrate 84 years of doing it her way, Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Friday 9-10 a.m. at Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, Riverside. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery.

I know you guys were all a very close family and will miss your mom greatly.

I can recall the days when she used to come to stay with us to visit Nana. She always greeted us with a big smile on her face. I love how she used the two sets of stairs and halls as her circuit track for power walking. She was a charming lady and a special person. She was truly unforgettable. I wish for her peaceful soul. Kindest thoughts and prayers. I express my heartfelt sympathies and prayers for your family.
She was an impressive lady, u will be missed!

Dear Liz and family, your mom meant a lot to me and I am so sorry for your loss. Her and I went to Floriday, a cruise and a visit to my Aunt in New York where we both went to a broadway play, my first and I think hers too. I still have the Playbill. She was my second Mom and though circumstances got in the way I thought of her often. We used to get together with her family and play games and Bingo was a priority, even though she didn’t win too often. I know she will be greatly missed but OH WHAT MEMORIES. My deepest sympathy. We have all our wonderful Memories to keep us
Strong and keep her in our heart where she belongs. I cherish.the good times we had in New York and the parties and get together s at Riverside and many other places. I remember her
Laugh at the MOVIES . Her big smile ,when she sees you. A big Hug and Kiss.hello.and Goodbye. Many nice talks and remittances. . I will miss her . However I will never forget her.
When we were kids we all tried to measure up to Gram.
We were so excited to be taller than her, it meant we were getting bigger and older and we could stay up later and do the fun stuff.
As I look on this now I can only hope we can measure up to the level of toughness, determination and equal level of compassion she had.
One of my fondest memories of Gram, she was baby sitting. Anthony, Ricky and Whitney were in bed. Gram asked me if I wanted anything.
I said Chocolate milk. We searched all over for hershey’s or quick. We had the milk but no chocolate mix.
Gram found a can of chocolate frosting for cake. She made me the worst glass of chocolate milk ever!
I did not think too much about it then but as I got older and thought back on it, I realized Gram did not want to let me down and was determined to get me that glass of chocolate milk. I will remember that glass of chocolate milk until I meet up with Gram again. We will have a glass of chocolate milk, hopefully there will be some hershey syrup around.
