Howard was the definition of being humble: he had complete freedom from thinking about himself at all. When his nation needed him, he thought nothing of joining the Navy. Later, he never bragged that he had survived a kamikaze bombing on his ship: for Howard it simply wasn’t germane.
Although his family didn’t know about his exploits during the war, they did know they could rely on him. When his father and brother tragically died within three months of one another, he took to caring for his mother, and saw her through her darkest days.
As a blacksmith for US Pipe in Burlington, Howard could fix just about everything. No repairman ever saw the inside of his home in Beverly, that was always another duty he simply took on himself. Likewise, he also lent his time and ability to his family’s business, Strouse’s Market in Riverside for many years.
Howard is the husband of the late Patricia (nee Cryan), and is the father of Howard E. of Florida, Suzanne Daily (Marty) of New Hampshire and Joyce Strouse (Richard Reilly) of Palmyra. He is also survived by 7 grandsons, 4 great-grandsons and 2 great-granddaughters.
Come celebrate Howard’s 89 wonderful years (Aug. 15, 1924-Nov. 1, 2013) Wednesday from 6-8 PM and from 9 AM Thursday at the Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside, where the service will be at 10 AM. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery, Riverside.
