James S. Smith
James (Jim) S. Smith, 81, of Ventnor, NJ and formerly Delran, NJ passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014 surrounded by his loving sons and family at his home.
Jim was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He married in 1952 to the late Edna R. Smith (nee Linz) also of Philadelphia.
Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After Army service they moved to Delran, NJ in 1956 where they raised four sons. He retired from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in 1997 and spent his retirement years at his Ventnor home where he enjoyed life at the Jersey Shore.
He is survived by four sons, James (Tracy) of Birmingham, England, grandchildren Emily and Sophie; Joseph of Indian Mills, NJ, grandchild Corey; Jack (France) of Woodland Township, NJ, grandchildren Vanessa LeDee (Jason) and Dean (Desirae); and Jason of Delran, NJ; and his brother William (Penny) Isaac of Villas, NJ, nephews Billy and Brian.
Come celebrate 81 great years Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday 10–11 a.m.at Sweeney Funeral Home, 337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside NJ where there will be a service at 11. Interment Lakeview Cemetery, Cinnaminson. Share a fond memory about Jim at Sweeneyfh.com.

I am truly sorry for your loss.
Knew Jim for just over 3 years. He was a great neighbor who enjoyed his family and riding his bike on the boardwalk. Prayers and thoughts with the family. Jim will be missed on N , Derby Avenue in Ventnor.
I have spent the last several days with a heavy heart, and tears in my eyes trying to except the fact that my father had to leave us. I am sure in time my thoughts of him will warm my heart and bring a smile to my face; just as it has since my mother passed seven years ago.
My father was a perfectionist in what ever he did whether it was welding pipe, fabricating equipment, installing boilers, repairing fryer lines, negotiating contracts for the membership, or keeping the wheels of the union office turning.
However the thing he did best and took the most pride in was raising my brothers and I. Four boys, nine years apart, all with different interests and individual personalities. He was always there for us with a loving heart teaching us and nurturing us the become the men we are today. He was there to celebrate of triumphs and support us in our shot falls. I know he was proud of all of us, and his grandchildren as well.
One of the things Dad gave to me was my mechanical abilities. From and early age I realized that what I was capable of doing was a gift from my Father; this gift proved to be far more valuable than something I could have learned from a university. Dad must have somehow known that me and schooling were not meant to be.
I couldn’t have asked for a better to man to be my Father, my Friend, my Mentor. I can only hope I was as good of a son to him as he was a father to me.
I will miss him dearly and treasure my memories of him until my final day.

Jim was a great neighbor who always had time to say “hello” . He certainly will be missed on N. Derby Ave. Our sympathy goes out to the family .
I met Jim a couple of time at his home in Ventor through his son Jason who I fished with. Jim was a very interesting person to talk to and knowledgeable on any subject we discussed. He was a generous person letting us use his house and his boat whenever Jason and I would spend the day fishing. I was impressed with his demeanor the first time I met Jim, he was man to be respected. Jim may have left this world but he left something for all who had the pleasure to know him. He left us with his memory not to be forgotten.

Poem I wrote this morning. July 26th called “Dad” Happy Birthday Joe!
DAD a word I had spoken so many times I’m sure you all kwow.
DAD was followed by words of happiness and pride about Me, Him, Mom, Family & Friends. He just had to hear and know.
DAD was followed by questions some very easy or hard. His answere was always comforting, it came from deep within his heart.
DAD you have taught me so many things, taken me so many places, My life is rich with experiance.
DAD the fun we shared keeps me smiling and happy you bet it will last.
DAD some of the nature we experienced together will everlast. Niagra Falls, Grizzly Bears in Alaska, The large pod of dolphins surrounding us in the Atlantic Ocean so vast. It was so amazing, we were so happy to see, Oh how could I forget Denali, the Mighty Mt. McKinley.
DAD we had so many great times together and also we had great pain.
DAD we lost loved ones, Now many tears are shed again.
DAD as I slept beside you in your final weeks, I felt again like your little boy who was protected by your loving strength and kindness.
DAD we shared many good memories upto your final resting place.
DAD it was so sad and tearful to watch you pass away.
DAD it comforting to know your pain has gone away.
DAD, God called you up to him “Jim” come with me.
DAD I noticed Mom’s star was much brighter on Tuesday nite it shined down on the sea.
DAD just keep listening you will always hear. DAD, DAD, DAD coming from me.

Jim u and I worked together over 20 years,never had an argument because of your nature,not mine we had a lot of good stories and good times I will miss u a lot it was good to see u a couple of weeks ago even tho u were not feeling well u were still a good host RIP my friend and pal.

Our deepest sympathy on the passing of Uncle Jim. I have many fond memories of childhood and among the best were the times that the Smith and Spees families would get together in Delran or Rydal. Uncle Jim was always so very kind to us and Aunt Edna was like a second Mom to me. Also, I always thought my Smith cousins were the coolest guys around. Nearly 40-years ago we moved to Alaska but kept in touch , and had the privilege of having Uncle Jim, Aunt Edna and Jason visit us several times. Very fortunately my job gave me the opportunity to travel back east and my family had the chance to visit with Uncle Jim, Joe, Jason, Jack & France and the entire family. It was clear how much Uncle Jim loved everyone and we spent great times catching up as he shared pictures of his grandchildren and the entire family with such pride. We saw firsthand that his years were filled with love, laughter and friends. It was a joy for Ruth and I to introduce our sons to “Great Uncle Jim” and I have to say “great uncle” is a fitting title. We will never forget the boat rides, bike rides, meals shared and fun days but most of all the chance to spend time together. To all of our cousins and the entire family – please know you are in our thoughts and prayers and that your Dad’s spirit will be with us forever. Love, Brad, Ruth, Bryan & Brendan
Jim was a gentleman’s gentleman. I will really miss his company at breakfast with the guys.
Dad had four sons he loved very much and he had a keen interest in what we (and our families) did and achieved.
Although we sons have different interests, we share one very important bond. We have but one hero, and that was Dad.
