Strong, independent, caring, and kind. She always said she was a Beckert and a Hiles, meaning she was just like her mom and dad. Growing up, she was the youngest of 9. She loved all of her brothers and sisters and had a unique relationship with each one. Her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother to Katie and John. No different than she was as a mother, she was a very present grandmother. She never missed a ball game, school play, graduation, or the chance to spoil them rotten. Family was everything to Joyce, from taking care of her husband and children to being there for her mother and siblings. She cooked a great mac and cheese and collard soup, plus the most fantastic brownies.
She took great pride in the home she built with John. 49 years of marriage all started with a chance encounter while passing through a car wash. Very rarely would you find one without the other, as they truly enjoyed each other’s company. One of their favorite things was cheering on the Phillies and the Eagles. She is survived by her children, Michael (Kim) Martins, Jennifer Daly (Michelle Thorpe); and her sister, Delores Cogdill.
Come celebrate 72 great years, Friday 11 a.m. at Lawnside Cemetery, Woodstown. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Judes Children’s Hospital will be appreciated.
