Marguerite Whitaker

Marguerite Everline Whitaker was born on July 26, 1931 in Swedesboro, New Jersey. She was born into a challenging world at the beginning of the Great Depression. After the loss of her father left her mother widowed, young Marguerite would ultimately leave high school, sacrificing an education to work and help support her family. Marguerite‘s strength and independent nature were forged during these formative teen years. She met her husband, Bill Whitaker, while teaching him how to dance. They were dance partners for almost 68 years. They were married on March 17, 1956 and left their home in Swedesboro for Fort Bragg, N.C. Bill served his time in the United States Army before they returned to South Jersey. They built a home on Sherwin Road in Harrison Township. It is there she raised her two boys. Marguerite had many jobs but is best remembered for her years at the newly constructed Clearview Junior High School. She worked in the lunch room, running the cash register, keeping a sharp eye on her boys, and forming lifelong friendships. She will always be remembered by those friends as Maggie. Marguerite found great joy in her work but also enjoyed days on the Jersey Shore. She could always be found in the stands at her boys sporting events or enjoying life with her friends and neighbors of Richwood. The dance partners made a comfortable life and were able to put their boys through college, travel, retire, and enjoy grandchildren. Retirement also took them away from Sherwin Road to North Carolina, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and lastly in Seaford, Delaware. Marguerite drifted peacefully into the arms of her Lord in the early hours of January 23. She was 92 years old. Marguerite is survived by her husband, William, Sons, William Whitaker Jr (Kathy) of Delaware, Thomas Whitaker (Drury) of Virginia and Grandchildren, Mary Kay Baldwin, William Whitaker III, Emily Willey, Colin Whitaker, and Mason Whitaker. Marguerite also had the joy of 9 great grandchildren. There will be a celebration of Marguerites incredible life on January 29, 2024 at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church 315 High Street Seaford, Delaware. A time for visiting from 10:30a.m. to 11:00a.m. Followed by a memorial service at 11:00a.m. Internment and graveside service to follow at Lake Park Cemetery, 701 Park Ave, Swedesboro, Woolwich Township, New Jersey, 3:00p.m.
