Joseph – Putek
Joe had a book in him: he didn’t write it, he lived it. As a kid his love for comic books and reading made Joe look to the horizon for adventure. After graduating from Hamilton College he left for Asia, not speaking any of the languages, and built a life for himself. He lived and traveled in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Sumatra, Borneo, Manado, Irian Jaya, Napal, Philippines, Laos, Thailand and eventually settled in Kampong Cham, Cambodia where he owned several English schools and a restaurant called the Mekong Crossing. It was a cross between Cheers and a travel agency, with westerners seeking his advise on the lay of the land and getting the added benefit of Joe’s hardy laugh and easygoing nature. Joe didn’t wait for life to happen. He went out to find it: he rode motorcycles through the jungle, went scuba diving in the most exotic locations and once biked across New Zealand by himself. Joe was a dominant force on the football field in East Stroudsburg and taught skiing at Shawnee.rnJoe was the son of Carl and the late Judith Putek and is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.rnCome celebrate 45 adventuresome years Sunday, June 13, 1PM at Daley Life Celebration Studio, 1518 Kings Hwy., Swedesboro, NJ 08085. Joe was the toughest kid from that graduation picture of Brian’s. He was also one of the most genuine people that I ever had the pleasure of knowing.It is true when they say that the good die young, as he was a great person,even though his mustache was vintage 70’s porn star.My condolences go out to every person whose life Joe touched,I’m sure it is many, and most importantly to his family,who must be so proud of the accomplishments of this awesome human, who gave much more than he ever took. Joe was one of the nicest people in the class of ’83. He always had a big smile and a kind word to say to everyone. Joe will be greatly missed. The entire Putek family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I have some great memories of Joe in school and football days. Joe was always fun to be around and a role model for many. Thank you Joe for contributing so much to so many. My condolences to the Putek family.

Joe was a great guy – full of life and personality. I am truly heartbroken for his friends and family. Many many years ago Joe showed me a beautiful waterfall near his home in PA, to see this site from his eyes, is a memory I have kept forever. It’s not surprising to me to now know of his extraordiary life. Rest peacefully Joe. You will be missed.
I’m sorry I missed the services. Joe was a great guy, a great friend and I’m sure, a great, great man. I feel blessed that he was a friend of mine and I knew him in this lifetime. Peace, Joe, you are missed.
my thoughts are with Joe, family and friends. Chats, parties and nights-out with Joe were always the best. He was true and real, and he expected the same from others. heartbroke when I saw Brian Keelan’s facebook notes. Last time I spoke with Joe; he was in an airport somewhere in Asia, and we were busting on each other for our “career paths” laughing, and promising to do beers and catch-up on his next visit to the states. Joe, be well. always remembered.

Sorry to hear about Joe…just found out about his passing. I also knew him at Hamilton College and always thought he was a really nice guy.
I just heard about this and am so very sad. I have many, many, many fond memories of Joe from Hamilton College. He was a great friend and I wish we had kept in touch after college. It sounds like he lived his life exactly the way he wanted to – it’s just too sad that it was cut short. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. I will always remember Joe.
Carl, this is just such shocking & saddenning news, I’m sorry I just found out today, but I’m glad we had the opportunity to speak this morning. I’m at a loss for words, but please know that my thoughts and prayers will always be with you. As I mentioned when we were speaking, I thought about Joe often, the good memories from Hamilton College, and the couple of trips to your house. I’ll never forget the drive home from Stroudsburg to Newburgh in a blizzard after the Super Bowl party – that was one heck of a character building ride. Joe had dinner with me and my family in Newburgh on several occassions back in the college days, I believe for Passover and/or possibly Thanksgiving if memory serves me correctly. rnrnI will miss Joe’s strong spirit, I know you do as well each and every day, and I am so so sorry for your loss. My friend for a short time he spent in Taiwan, I will always remember Joe for our dirt bikes, we both rode Yamaha DTs, and man did we ride them. We rode around Taiwan one year. He and I (and several local lads) used to have wheelie competitions after tossing back a few beers in the local… When he left Taiwan, I felt a loss … I feel an even larger loss now. RIP my friend …
Joe and I shared an apartment in Taipei Taiwan while we were teaching English there. We lost touch as each we went our separate ways, but I found this site when I was looking him up after remembering a something he said back then that just made me smile again these 20 years later. I’m so sorry to find him gone. Joe was a great friend to me, one who cared about others and made them happy with his own joy. My condolences to all family and friends.
