Edith – Black
If you met Edith two things were certain: She would light up with a smile and if you needed a volunteer Edith would say yes. She said yes to: Salem Co. Contact, Woodstown Elementary School (tutoring), Snelbaker Home, chairing the “Old Boys” birthday dinner, The American Red Cross, and as a Big Sister mentor. At St. John’s Church she was the secretary, Editor of the Newsletter “The Seed’, and headed the committee for the monthly Ruritan Club dinners. She was secretary for the Woodstown-Pilesgrove 4th of July Parade for many years. That was in addition to being available to her extended family.rnAfter graduating from Woodstown High in 1948 Edith worked for The Boy Scouts Gloucester/Salem Co. Council then Woodstown Bd. Of Ed. and later Kingsway Regional High School. She served one 3 year term on the Woodstown Bd. Of Education.rnrnHer survivors include siblings: Fred Black, Alvin Shorty Black, Robert Black, Caroline Ridgway, and Dorothy Strobel and many neices and nephews.rnrnCome celebrate 79 congenial years Tuesday at an 11AM Graveside service , Lake Park Cemetery, Swedesboro.rnDonations to St. John’s U-M Church, PO Box 2, Harrisonville, NJ 08039 will be appreciated.rnArrangements Daley Life Celebration Studio, Swedesboro.rn

Dear Family and Friends of Edith:rnrnI believe God speaks to us in (magnificently) small ways as well as large ones. Yesterday’s sermon at St.John’s UMC of Harrisonville (Edith’s church, by her own confession) was entitled “Uniquely and Wonderfully Made”. Because I will be unable to attend her service in person, God has put on my heart to use this method to let Edith’s family know how I perceived her to be “uniquely and wonderfully made”…
These words, used together, spell EDITH, but there is one thing that is missing. There is no ?F? for Friend, and that is what she was to me most of all, and I will miss her. May God be with you all as I am sure you will too.rnrnWith deepest sympathy, Hope Kibler
E – Energetic – aside from the last few years which have been difficult ones health-wise for Edith, she was active and full of life and offered her ability to “get around town” to help others.rnD – Determined – I was very impressed that, even as she approached the winter season of her life, she attempted to stay in touch with technology by using a computer. I remember that when she asked me to guide her, she wanted to know how to do it herself. And, she played a “mean” game of solitaire, too!rnI – Independent – this word immediately came to mind when thinking about Edith. I probably don’t need to elaborate to anyone that knew her, but her independent spirit was to be admired.rnT – Tenacious – Webster defines this as “persistent in maintaining or adhering to something valued or habitual”. Edith experienced trials and tribulations just as anyone else does in this worldly experience, but in particular, I remember her saying “Nothing is going to keep me from my church”. She obviously held a love of the Lord and valued the celebration and praise that took place in Harrisonville each time she went.rnH – Helpful – many of the ways in which she helped others by volunteering were listed above, and I am sure there were many that were not listed as well.
I wish to send my deep sympathy to Edith’s family. Edith and I worked together at Kingsway Regional High School in the 80’s. She was a wonderful person to work with and would do anything to help anyone. I never worked with anyone as kind as her again.I kept in touch with her for a while after we both left Kingsway, but some how we drifted into our new lives.rnI was just thinking of her the other day and was wondering how she was doing and then I saw her Obituary in the Times. I will aways remember her and that wonderful smile. I am so glad the pictures are displayed. I enjoyed seeing her again after all these years. I know she is going to a good place.rnLucille D’Aurairn
