He came to the U.S. from his native Argentina to make a better life: Oscar hit the ground running. He was the definition of an entrepreneur; adventurous, dipping his hands in everything from supermarkets to mechanic shops to real estate. Even his semi-retirement found him on the go: he decided he’d drive a truck, got his CDL license and along with his wife, Gloria traveled all 48 contiguous states as well as Mexico and Canada. Though he had a great love of the U.S., he never forgot his Argentinian roots, returning there for a few years so his kids could attend high school. Though serious in the workplace, he was a fun and playful father and even more so as a grandfather, lovingly called “Oscars” by his grandchildren. Family never had to wonder about his dedication to them: every text exchange included his obligatory “Do you know how much I love you?” . Especially into asado (steak) and Italian restaurants, trips to New York weren’t uncommon. He’d drive hours and spend his last dime on a great dinner. And he cooked with the best of them as well, especially soups, though he never quite figured out how to make a small portion. If his T.V. was on, he’d be catching up on the news, checking in with his Spanish soap operas or watching some soccer (a fan of Messi, Barcelona and the Argentinian National Team.) Of course, if the Phils, Eagles or Sixers were on he cheered for them as well.
Oscar met a pretty girl at a party in New York in 1970. Gloria loved his striking looks and that he put the gentle in gentleman. They shared a marriage blessed by two children, Viviann (Brett) Schorle and Ivan (Hetal); and later by 4 grandchildren, Krish, Rhea, Javier and Isa. He is survived by his brother, Pedro Olmedo.
Come celebrate Oscar’s 87 great years on Saturday, November 23, 2024, 1 p.m to 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church (St. Clare’s of Assisi Parish) , 313 Memorial Drive, Gibbstown, NJ followed by Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Interment private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations to ACLAMO (aclamo.org/donate) will be appreciated.
